My name is Ann, and I live with an invisible disability. I have dysautonomia that causes a wide range of conditions, including neurogenic intestinal dysmotility and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), which cause pain, fatigue, and difficulty with eating and sleeping. Since I don’t “look” disabled, the effects of these conditions are particularly isolating. In 2014, I applied for and received my first mobility assistance dog, Nala, from Fidos For Freedom, Inc. This beautiful black Lab from Project2Heal brought so much light to my life just by her presence! It was life-changing to be able to have Nala retrieve items for me, tug off clothing when I was too bloated to bend over or lay on my stomach when I was in pain. Having Nala at my side allowed me to be independent and maintain my dignity. When Nala retired in 2022, I was anxious about being matched with a successor dog. However, Fidos For Freedom is dedicated to making the best matches possible between dogs and clients, so I knew my successor dog would be perfect for me. On October 15, 2022, I was matched with Franklyn, a handsome yellow Lab and one of Nala’s great nephews from Project2Heal. Being matched with Franklyn has been as life-changing in a new and incredible way. Franklyn is pure sunshine and just what I need in my life right now. His enthusiasm to help me and unfailing love have healed me in ways that I never thought possible. Thank you, Fidos For Freedom and Project2 Heal, for two miracle dogs!
