maya and bitsy

I ’m Bitsy, a client of Fidos for Freedom, and I have an incurable inflammatory muscle disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness and wasting called Inclusion Body Myositis. Everyday activities are extremely difficult. I was constantly asking for help to open doors, pick up items I dropped, help with laundry, and taking my coat off, just to name a few  of my daily struggles. I used to be very independent and asking for help was embarrassing at times.

On September 14, 2019, I was matched with a beautiful, intelligent, Yellow Lab named Maya. I never knew a dog could fill your heart with such joy and love. I now have a hard-working partner (teammate) to help me with everyday challenges. Maya has helped me gain back my independence, increased the level of my confidence, and fills my day with great loyalty, dedication, and affection. She helps in the kitchen, with laundry, and with tasks such as taking off my jacket and shoes.  Maya will get Terry, my husband, when I need him. I will never be able to thank Project 2 Heal (the organization that donated her to Fidos), Maya’s trainers, and Fidos enough for giving me back my life.
